Best sunset spots in Dubrovnik: where the sun really sets, month by month
Dubrovnik's sun sets anywhere from south-west in December to west-north-west in June, so the best spot depends on the month. Here is where it really goes down, what each place costs and when to get there, checked on 29 September 2026.
Short answer
For the full sun going into the sea, go west: Srđ by cable car (30 EUR return, April to November), the Lapad bay promenade, Babin Kuk or Danče below Park Gradac. The Buža cliff bars face south, so you get golden light over Lokrum rather than the sunset itself, and the city walls let in their last visitors before sunset in almost every month. Sunset ranges from about 16:14 in mid-December to 20:29 in late June.

Local time, including summer time. The after-glow (civil twilight) lasts about another 30 to 35 minutes. Direction is the compass bearing of the setting sun: 270 is due west.

Srđ: the high view, by cable car or on foot
At 412 metres above the Old Town, Srđ looks west over Lapad and the Elaphiti islands and straight down on the walls, so it works in every season it is reachable.

The lower station is an 8 to 12 minute walk from the Pile or Ploče gates. From April to October it runs long after sunset, so you can stay for the after-glow. In November it closes at 17:00, which still works: sunset is between 16:40 and 16:15, but you must be on the car up by 16:30.

Reviewers from April to September 2026 call the 30 EUR return pricey but worth it, say the hour or two before sunset is the busiest time, and advise arriving well before sunset for a spot at the rail. One August 2026 reviewer found better, quieter sunset angles by walking past the main platform.

The terrace faces the Old Town, Lokrum, Lapad bay and the islands. For the front row at sunset you need a booking; for just a drink, the bar side is simpler.
What reviewers say: Tripadvisor 4.7 (4,990 reviews) on 29 Sep 2026. Many 2026 reviewers booked two weeks to three months ahead to get a front-row sunset table; a walk-in in August 2026 got in but still advises booking. Food is repeatedly called pricey but worth it for the view, and on cool spring evenings staff hand out blankets and run heat lamps. One July 2026 review complains about slow service despite a booking.

The zig-zag path with the Stations of the Cross is the free way up and works in winter, when the cable car is shut. Coming down after sunset, bring a torch: the trail is rocky and not lit. A one-way cable car ticket up and the walk down in daylight is the other combination.
Old Town, the walls and Pile
The Old Town itself mostly catches the glow, not the sunset: the walls close first, and the famous cliff bars face south. The better sunset spots are just outside Pile, facing west.

Put those hours next to the sunset times: from April to mid-October the last entry is roughly 25 to 75 minutes before sunset, and from November to March it is one to three hours before. We found no official rule on how long you may stay on the circuit after the last entry, so do not count on it. The one exception is the last week of October: the clocks go back on the 25th, sunset drops to about 16:50, and entry is still allowed until 17:00. The rest of the year, walk the walls in late afternoon for the warm light and move to Srđ, Pile or Lapad for the sunset itself.
Fort Lovrijenac

Lovrijenac is better as the thing you watch at sunset than the place you watch from: it sits on its rock west of the walls, and the evening light hits it from Šulić, Dodo and Park Gradac. Visit it on your walls ticket in the late afternoon, then step down to the bay for the sunset.
The Buža cliff bars

There are two bars, an upper and a lower one, on terraces in the rocks outside the walls. They face south, so in summer the sun sets far to the right behind the land and walls. What you get is gold light on the walls and Lokrum, a swim off the rocks and the crowd, not the sun dropping into the sea.

Reviewers keep mentioning cash only, few seats at sunset, pricey drinks in plastic cups and no toilets. A May 2026 Rick Steves forum reply says the bars do not quite face the sunset and points people to Srđ for the real thing, and an August 2026 guide describes every chair filling within 15 minutes of 6 pm.
Beach Bar Dodo, above Šulić beach

A small, informal bar with swing seats looking across the cove to Lovrijenac. Late in the day the sun drops behind the fortress, which is the picture people come for.
What reviewers say: Tripadvisor 4.6 (403 reviews) on 29 Sep 2026. Reviewers praise the cocktails, burgers and calamari and the view of Lovrijenac, and warn about limited seating and plastic cups; one 2025 visitor found the toilets out of order.
Park Gradac

A pine park on the cliffs above Pile, a few minutes from the gate, with benches over the sea. It looks at the Old Town and Lovrijenac as they turn gold, and a path leads down to Danče for the open-sea view.

The city's oldest public swimming spot, below Gradac and the church of St Mary. Because it faces west, the sun goes down over open water here, and it is shaded in the morning and sunny from noon to sunset.
What reviewers say: Tripadvisor 3.7 (28 reviews) on 29 Sep 2026. Older reviews like the local feel, clear deep water and sunset; two April 2026 reviewers disliked the atmosphere (loud music, a locals-only feel), so treat it as a local swimming rock rather than a sunset bar.
Lapad, Babin Kuk and Gruž: the sun into the sea
The Lapad peninsula faces west, so this is where the sun really drops into the Adriatic. It is about 3 km from the Old Town by bus, taxi or the flat promenade.

The bay at the end of the Lapad promenade is signposted as Sunset Beach and faces the sunset. Treat it as a free walk-and-watch spot: the old beach bar there is closed.
What reviewers say: Tripadvisor 3.6 (531 reviews) for Lapad Beach on 29 Sep 2026. Reviewers in June to August 2026 like the clear water and sunset view but describe an abandoned restaurant building, closed toilets and few loungers at the end of the promenade.
Cave Bar More (Hotel More)

A bar inside a natural cave under the hotel, with a tunnel out to a terrace right on Lapad bay. The terrace is the sunset seat; with no bookings, arrive well before sunset.

Velika Petka forest park

The protected pine forest above Lapad has views back to the city and over Lapad and Gruž. It is the quiet, free choice, but the paths are steep and rocky in places: go up in daylight and bring a light for the way down.

Coral Beach Club

The 2026 season ends on 4 October.

A replica of a 16th-century Dubrovnik merchant ship sails along the walls and past Lokrum as the sun goes down. It is the easy way to see the walls lit from the sea, with a guide talking about the city's maritime past.

Check which way the spot faces
The sun sets at about 303 degrees (west-north-west) in June and about 238 degrees (south-west) in December. West-facing spots such as Srđ, Lapad, Babin Kuk and Danče see it go into the sea; south-facing ones such as the Buža bars only get the glow.
Srđ in November: be in the queue by 16:15
In November the cable car closes at 17:00 and the last car up leaves at 16:30, while sunset falls between 16:40 and 16:15. It works, but only if you ride up early and come down soon after.
Queue before the sunset rush, not during it
The cable car queue peaks in the hour or two before sunset and can take up to half an hour in summer. Aim to be at the top 45 to 60 minutes before sunset.
Carry cash for the cliff and beach bars
The Buža bars and Dodo are repeatedly described as cash only or cash preferred, and there is no ATM once you are down by the walls.
Bring a light for the walk down
Civil twilight ends about half an hour after sunset. The Srđ trail and the Petka paths are rocky and unlit, so start down with a torch or a charged phone.

What time is sunset in Dubrovnik?
It ranges from about 16:14 in mid-December to 20:29 in late June (local time). In 2026 it is 20:18 on 1 June, 19:22 on 1 September and 18:29 on 1 October; after the clocks go back on 25 October it drops to 16:50.
Can you watch the sunset from the Dubrovnik city walls?
Almost never. The closing time is also the last entry, and in 2026 it falls roughly 25 to 75 minutes before sunset from April to mid-October and one to three hours before it in winter. The exception is the last week of October, when sunset is around 16:50 to 16:41 and entry is still allowed until 17:00.
Can you see the sunset from Buža bar?
Not the sun going into the sea. The Buža bars face south towards Lokrum, and the sun sets behind the land and walls to the west. You get lovely golden light and the sea, but for the sunset itself go to Srđ or Lapad.
Is the Dubrovnik cable car open at sunset?
From April to October it runs well past sunset (until 20:00 to midnight depending on the date). In November it closes at 17:00, with the last ride up at 16:30. It is closed in December, January, February and March.
Do I need to book Panorama restaurant for sunset?
For a front-row table, yes. 2026 reviewers booked two weeks to three months ahead for sunset; walk-ins sometimes get a table, but it is busy.
Where can I watch the sunset in Dubrovnik for free?
The Lapad bay promenade, Danče below Park Gradac, Park Gradac itself, the Srđ trail and Velika Petka above Lapad all cost nothing. Lapad and Danče face west, so you see the sun go into the sea.
